Ernst-Bresslau Guest Professorship
Ernst Bresslau Visiting Professorship in the academic year 2026
This year, the Institute of Zoology at the University of Cologne is awarding the Ernst Bresslau Visiting Professorship for the fourth time. The recipient is Prof. Ing. Mgr. Jan Frouz from Charles University in Prague and the Czech Academy of Sciences in České Budějovice, Czech Republic, a scientifically outstanding expert in land reclamation and soil biology.
With the Ernst Bresslau Visiting Professorship established in 2016, our institute honors outstanding scientists and commemorates its founder Prof. Dr. Ernst Bresslau. In 1933, just eight years after his appointment as the first Director of the Institute of Zoology at the University of Cologne, Ernst Bresslau, like many of his colleagues at the University of Cologne, was forced into retirement by the Nazis, which amounted to a de facto ban on practising his profession. The visiting professorship is intended to contribute to an appropriate commemoration of the medical doctor and developmental biologist Ernst Bresslau and to remind us of the great injustice suffered by numerous university colleagues during the National Socialist era.
