Dr. Carlos Sánchez Arcos

My research focuses on elucidating the chemical mechanisms and chemical responses involved in ecological interactions by applying liquid and gas chromatography (LC/GC)-mass spectrometry (MS)-based metabolomic approaches.

We exploit the versatility of comprehensive non-targeted metabolomic approaches to identify the chemistry involved in biotic and abiotic interactions. Aiming to identify the nature of:

  1. Infochemicals responsible for the induction of phenotypic changes in plants, animals and algae.
  2. Metabolites involved in responses to predation and environmental changes.

  3. Chemical mechanisms involved in defences and adaptation

  4. Metabolites participating in symbiotic interactions

  5. Metabolites immersed in evolutionary processes

In the past, I have applied metabolomic approaches to:

  1. Elucidate plant defence metabolites involved in predation preference and evolutionary processes.

  2. Identify the fate of metabolites from above-ground activities and how they affect the chemical dynamics in groundwater systems.

  3. Understand the metabolic mechanism in algae to cope with environmental changes.

I am now working on elucidating predator kairomones responsible for triggering defence mechanisms in Daphnia and identifying infochemicals released by these microcrustaceans that maintain defence-develop trade-offs. In the same direction, I want to understand the endometabolic processes of phenotypic defence induction.

My future work focuses on studying the metabolic mechanism involved in defences, adaptations and evolutionary processes of aquatic and terrestrial plants by integrating various omic approaches.
